13 May NWP and Amentum announce $80,000 in Community Donations
Nuclear Waste Partnership (NWP) and its parent company Amentum announced $80,000 in donations to schools and community organizations in Carlsbad and Hobbs this week.
A donation of $20,000 to Carlsbad MainStreet, Keep Carlsbad Beautiful and Creative Carlsbad will help with refurbishing and beautifying the downtown area around the courthouse through the addition of new benches and trashcans. This is part of a larger local initiative to revitalize the local downtown area.
“Carlsbad MainStreet, Pearl of the Pecos, and Keep Carlsbad Beautiful strive to improve our community and districts in every way possible. This downtown rejuvenation project is the perfect example of that. Through collaboration between all of our organizations and the generous support of the Nuclear Waste Partnership and Amentum, we will have the opportunity to start the first phase of our beautification project,” said Ashley Key, Carlsbad MainStreet’s director. “These changes will help to build a thriving economic community in our downtown district and will draw our community members and visitors into our locally owned businesses. Thank you to Nuclear Waste Partnership and Amentum for your continued support of our organizations and community!”
“Amentum and its heritage companies have provided support to the WIPP communities for decades contributing approximately $9 million in donations since 1996,” said Jim Blankenhorn, Amentum Senior Vice President of Operations. “We understand the importance of giving back and are proud to continue supporting the communities where our employees live and work. These contributions demonstrate our commitment to supporting Carlsbad and Hobbs.”
Also benefiting from funding is the Hobbs School District that plans to put their $10,000 donation towards a STEM center at Sanger Elementary and the Carlsbad Municipal Schools, which also received $10,000 for the purchase of STEM supplies to further student learning.
MyPower Inc., an organization that empowers Lea County’s youth to reach their full individual potential by providing fun, social, and learning activities geared toward developing personal confidence, academic excellence, and enhanced life skills received $5000. Elaine Sena Cortez, Executive Director at MyPower, said, “the funding from NWP and Amentum will directly benefit the girls in our community and throughout Lea County. It will be used to facilitate MyPower’s programs where girls will be empowered to be brave, use their voice, self-advocate, tackle their fears, and live their very best life.”
Inspired by Science, an organization that promotes science education at the elementary school level in hopes of inspiring students to pursue education and careers in STEM-related fields received $10,000 to organize science related camps in the area. Past camps have had over 300 participants and spanned four states.
The Boys and Girls Club in Carlsbad received $5,000 to help purchase an Interactive projector to keep children safe yet provide them learning experiences during Covid-19. The Boys and Girls Club in Hobbs received $2,500 to assist with programming.
WHI Hobbs and Packs for Hunger in Carlsbad also received $5,000 each. Both organizations support schoolchildren over the weekends by providing backpacks of food to be taken home.
The Carlsbad Cavegirls soccer team received a donation of $8,000 to help them purchase championship rings to celebrate their win. They are the only team in the history of the program to win state.
Sean Dunagan, President and Project Manager for NWP, said that supporting the community is a high priority for the company. “Having grown up in Carlsbad, I know the value we as a company can bring and I’m pleased to be able to support local initiatives that create a better quality of life for all our residents. I also want to point out the giving hearts of our employees who donate about 3,000 volunteer hours each year. They are the foundation for everything we do at NWP.”
